This Simple And Deeply Hydrating Lotion Transforms Dry Skin | One Good Thing by Jillee

moisturizing lotion

Living in such a dry climate, I go through a lot of moisturizing lotion during the winter! I’ve tried dozens of different varieties in my quest to find one that can help me fight winter dryness without irritating my sensitive skin.

I eventually came across a recipe for a “semi-homemade” lotion that looked promising, so I decided to give it a try. It quickly became one of my go-to lotions, offering long-lasting moisture and deep hydration without feeling too heavy or greasy.

In today’s post, I’ll be showing you how you can make this simple moisturizing lotion at home! This easy and affordable DIY will help you maintain softer, more hydrated skin all winter long.

What’s In It?

This moisturizing lotion has just three simple ingredients, or four if you count the optional one. Here’s a quick overview of what they are and how they can help restore moisture to dry skin!

Baby Lotion

Formulated for delicate baby skin, baby lotion is extremely gentle and is typically free of dyes and fragrances. It offers a certain degree of moisture on its own, but here it serves as the perfect foundation for creating a richer, more intensely hydrating lotion.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is packed with fatty acids that can help nourish your skin, and its rich texture provides longer lasting moisture than a standard lotion. Cutting it with baby lotion gives you the best of both worlds—a deeply hydrating lotion that doesn’t feel greasy.

Vitamin E Cream

Vitamin E has an anti-inflammatory effect, helping to reduce the redness and calm the itchiness that often go hand-in-hand with dry skin. It also helps improve the function of the skin barrier, and offers plenty of moisture on its own (especially in cream form!)

Essential Oils

Dry skin often isn’t just dry, but can also be itchy, inflamed, and even painful! Adding lavender essential oil to your moisturizing lotion can help reduce these unpleasant side effects (and it will make your lotion smell wonderful too!)

How To Make A DIY Moisturizing Lotion For Dry Skin

Ingredients:

16 ounces baby lotion
8 ounces coconut oil
8 ounces vitamin E cream
Lavender essential oil (optional)

Note: This recipe makes about 32 ounces of lotion, enough to fill about four 8-ounce jars. You can easily half the amounts if you don’t need that much of it, or you could always give some to friends or family members.

Directions:

Add the lotion, coconut oil, and vitamin E cream to a mixing bowl. Use a stand mixer (or hand mixer) to mix the ingredients until it achieves a uniform texture.

If you prefer the texture of traditional lotions, you can stop there. For a lighter, more “whipped” texture, continue mixing on medium-high speed to incorporate more air.

lotion

Divide the lotion among four 8-ounce jars, then add lavender essential oil if desired and stir. (I added about 16 drops of lavender essential oil to one 8-ounce jar of lotion, but you could add more or less depending on your preference!)

Slather on your finished moisturizing lotion as needed to keep dryness at bay, and enjoy your softer, smoother skin! :-)
