After using my new oil cleanser for several months now, I wonder how I ever lived without it! Oil cleansing before using my water-based cleanser leaves my skin feeling clean, soft, and moisturized, and it feels extra soothing using it with my jade roller too.
Based on this positive experience with oil cleansing, I want to pass the knowledge onto you! Here you’ll get an overview of everything you need to know about oil cleansing, including how it works, how to do it, and the many reasons why you should give it a try for yourself.
What Is Oil Cleansing And How Does It Work?
Oil cleansing is based on a concept you might remember from science class: “like dissolves like.” Oil can be a stubborn substance to remove from any surface, but seemingly paradoxically, adding more oil can help lift it off the surface so it can be washed away more easily. (That’s where double cleansing comes in—more on that shortly.)
By applying this concept to facial cleansing, you can gently lift oily substances like makeup and excess sebum (the oil your skin produces naturally) from your skin without stripping it of its moisture. This makes oil cleansing a great option for those with dry, sensitive, or aging skin.
What Oil Cleanser Should I Use?
I use my Nourishing Oil Cleanser, which is one of the five products in my new Timeless by Jillee skincare system. It features 10 different all-natural, skin-friendly oils that work together to melt away makeup and impurities. This oil cleanser is free of parabens, silicone, and sulfates, is cruelty-free, vegan, and made in the USA.
My skin is both dry and highly sensitive, so adding this oil cleanser to my routine has been amazing for my skin. It’s moisturizing, feels great, and is really gentle as well. And I’m not the only one who loves this stuff—check out what other OGT readers have had to say about it:
- “The oil cleanser is absolutely amazing. I could massage it into my very dry skin all day long! I hate that I have to rinse it off!” – Kayren S.
- “I am new to Jillee’s double cleansing method and oil cleansers in general, but I have to say, I’m sold! I love how refreshed and nourished my skin feels after treating it with the Nourishing Oil Cleanser.” – Sarah M.
- “Feels like a spa treatment! I just LOVE the oil cleanser. Feels so good after a long day! It’s wonderful on my tired eyes and my skin feels so soft!” – Gina D.
Oil Cleansing As Part Of A Double Cleansing Routine
Oil cleansing is often used as the first step of a two-step cleansing process called double cleansing. The process involves using an oil cleanser first, then following up with a water-based cleanser (I use my Purifying Daily Cleanser for this).
The oil-based cleanser helps to dissolve and lift oil-based impurities off of your skin, including makeup, sunscreen, sebum, and pollution. By doing this step first, the water-based cleanser doesn’t have to work as hard to remove the remaining grime, and afterward your skin will feel clean, soft, and moisturized.
Not only is double cleansing more thorough, but it can also revitalize dull skin, help moisturize dry skin, and help other skincare products to work more effectively. That’s why double cleansing is a fixture of many Japanese and Korean skincare routines!
Who Should Be Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing is particularly beneficial for those with naturally oily skin and anyone who applies oily or sticky products on a daily basis, including makeup and sunscreen. Since we should all be wearing sunscreen every day—check out the link below for more on that—that means we can all benefit from double cleansing too.

How To Use An Oil Cleanser
- Apply 2 pumps of Nourishing Oil Cleanser onto your finger, then gently massage it onto your dry face (makeup and all) for a minute or so. You can always dampen your hands if needed to get a good lather going.
- Next, you’ll rinse off the oil cleanser and oily residue. You do this either with the aid of a damp makeup remover cloth (which I highly recommend for because it also provides gentle exfoliation), or just by rinsing well with water.
- Follow immediately by cleansing with Purifying Daily Cleanser or another water-based cleanser as usual.
So that’s the scoop about oil cleansing! If you struggle with dry or sensitive skin like I do, I definitely recommend giving it a try for yourself, regardless of whether you buy it or DIY it! :-)
