Try as you might, there’s no foolproof way to keep your clothes looking brand new forever. Even if you’re diligent about laundering your clothes according to the tag directions, there’s one sign of clothing wear that is more or less unavoidable: pilling.
Nearly every kind of fabric is susceptible to pilling over time, but they tend to be particularly apparent on sweaters and other outerwear. A sweater with pills all over it is likely to look old and worn out, even if it’s relatively new!

But on the bright side, pilling is far from a death sentence for your favorite sweaters. In fact, it’s totally possible to remove pilling and return your sweater to like-new condition—all it takes is the right equipment. Today I’ll be sharing my absolute favorite tool for removing pilling from sweaters (or any clothing item, really.)
The Best Way To Remove Fabric Pilling From Sweaters
The quickest and easiest way to remove pilling is to use a fabric or lint shaver. There are a lot of different models out there to choose from, but the one I have (which I got on Amazon for under $15) is the JUEYINGBAILI Lint Shaver, which I love for several reasons.
First, this shaver comes with a 60-day full refund period and a 12-month replacement period, both of which are rare to get with this kind of tool. Many of the fabric shavers you see online are cheaply made and don’t promise anything by way of durability, so it’s great that I could have gotten a refund or replacement if this one didn’t work out or failed early on. (It worked great from the start though, and still does!)
Another thing I like about the JUEYINGBAILI Lint Shaver is that there are a couple of different options for powering it. It can run cordlessly with two AA batteries, which is great if you’re taking it on the go. It also comes with a power cord you can use to power it from a wall socket when you’re at home. Like I always say, it’s nice to have options!
And lastly, I like the fact that this shaver comes with two extra blades. I like knowing that if the blades start to feel dull at any point, I can quickly swap it out for one of the spare blades and keep on trucking! The shaver also comes with a cover you can snap onto it when you’re using it on delicate fabrics like wool for added protection.
How To Use A Fabric Shaver To Save A Sweater
Using this fabric shaver is quick and easy! Just lay the sweater out on a flat surface, turn the shaver on, and run it over the surface of the sweater. The blades will make short work of all those pills, and they will get sucked up into the lint holder that surrounds the blade.
Depending on the state of your sweater, it might take a few minutes to remove all the pills. But it’s surprisingly satisfying to watch all those little fuzz balls disappear, and when you’re done, you’ll be amazed at the difference. Your sweater will look years younger, like it just had a fabric facelift.
And in the future, you can pull out your fabric shaver as soon as you notice new pills forming. You’ll be able to maintain that like-new look of your sweater with very little effort! :-)
