The One Easy DIY You’ll Use Every Day This Summer | One Good Thing by Jillee

I’m sure that most of you, like me, have some sort of skincare routine you perform routinely (or at least semi-routinely) to address certain concerns and keep your skin clear and healthy. You might keep it soft and hydrated with a daily moisturizer or skin softener, protect it from the sun with a sunscreen, or use other products like toners or serums before applying your makeup.

But regardless of what you put on your skin at the start of the day, no skincare routine would be complete if it didn’t include taking the time to cleanse your skin to wash away makeup, dirt, and other impurities before crawling into bed. After all, most of us know all too well that going to bed without washing your face can quickly lead to unwanted blemishes!

But what don’t realize is that it isn’t just the skin on your face that can benefit from regular cleansing—your scalp can too!

Why It’s Important To Keep Your Scalp Clean And Healthy

Shampoo typically does a fine job of washing away dirt and oil from your scalp while you’re washing your hair, but not everyone washes their hair every day. (Personally, I shudder to think of the state my fine, dry hair would be in if I shampooed it that frequently!)

But without regular cleansing in between shampoos, impurities like sweat, sunscreen, chlorine, salt water, and hair products can build up on your scalp. Over time, that grimy scalp buildup can contribute to problems like flaking and and even hair loss.

And since summer is just around the corner, it’s a great time to prepare for the hot weather ahead by mixing up a simple and natural solution you can use to keep your scalp clean and healthy all season long. I’m calling it my cleansing “scalp spritz,” and it includes a combination of all-natural ingredients that can help to regulate oil production, reduce itchiness, and leave your scalp feeling clean and refreshed.

But before we dive in to making it, let’s take a quick look at the ingredients that go into it and their scalp-friendly benefits.

3 Natural Ingredients That Support Scalp Health

1. Witch Hazel

I often refer to witch hazel as “your skin’s best friend,” and that applies to your scalp as well! When applied to the scalp, witch hazel can help reduce inflammation and control oil production, helping to eliminate redness, flaking, and itching.

Be sure to look for alcohol-free witch hazel to use in this spritz. Some witch hazel formulations (especially some that are marketed as toners) contain alcohol, which can be really drying and make flakiness and itching even worse.

2. Rosehip Oil

While adding rosehip oil to the spritz is optional, I highly recommend it for those who struggle with dry hair or a dry scalp. It’s packed with nourishing fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, making it ideal for maintaining healthy skin and hair. (Curious about what else rosehip oil is useful for? Check out this post!)

3. Tea Tree Oil

And last, but certainly not least, this spritz also contains a few drops of cleansing and purifying tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and healing properties that can help soothe existing scalp issues, and even help prevent future issues by getting rid of pore-clogging impurities. By combining witch hazel, rosehip oil, and tea tree oil, you can create a simple yet effective scalp spritz you can use to cool, refresh, and cleanse your scalp as often as you like! Follow these easy directions to whip it up at home:
