The 5 Surprising Ways You’ll Benefit From Shaving Your Face | One Good Thing by Jillee

face shaving

Dermaplaning has gotten quite popular as a facial treatment over the last couple of years! And while it may sound complex and scientific, “dermaplaning” is just a fancy dermatology term for shaving your face. (There’s a little more to it than that, but not much!)

After doing some research about the benefits of shaving your face, I was game to give it a try. And while at first shaving my face felt a bit strange, but now that I know how soft and smooth it makes my skin look and feel, I’m a full-fledged believer!

(And speaking of which, I recently found a facial razor I like so much that I decided to make it available in the By Jillee Shop! More on razors later in this post, but you can check out my brand new folding facial razor here.)

In case you’ve been curious about what all the buzz is about, I thought I’d give you scoop here today! By the end of this post, you’ll not only know about all the best benefits of shaving your face, you’ll also know exactly how to do it so you can give it a try for yourself!

5 Benefits Of Shaving Your Face

1. Eliminates Dark Hairs

You know those pesky dark, thick hairs that sprout out of various locations on your face and neck? Shaving is a quick way to get rid of them! And it’s often quicker than hunting each one down and plucking them individually.

2. Makes Makeup Easier To Apply

Clearing your face of both dark hairs and peach fuzz can make it easier to put on makeup! Your foundation will glide smoothly and easily onto your hair-free face. Some women even say they end up using less makeup because it’s so easy to apply and blend!

3. Promotes Clearer Skin

In addition to removing hair, shaving also helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This makes it much harder for dead skin to buildup over time and cause breakouts. It’s a great way to incorporate regular exfoliation into your beauty routine!

4. Enhances Effects Of Skincare Products

Another benefit of shaving is that it can make your skincare products work better. The exfoliating effect of shaving allows products to dive deep into your skin to deliver vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial ingredients. And if your products work better, you can use less which will save you money over time.

5. Easier Than Other Hair Removal Methods

There are plenty of options out there for removing hair and dead skin from your face, right? Plucking, waxing, dermaplaning, threading… this list goes on! But the advantage of shaving is that you can do it quickly and cheaply in your own home. Plus it doesn’t hurt, which is more than you can say about waxing and plucking!

Will Shaving Make My Hair Grow Back Darker Or Thicker?

The answer is NO, shaving your face will not make your hair grow back darker, thicker, or coarser. This is many women’s biggest concern about shaving, but there’s no need to worry!

According to Elizabeth K. Hale, a Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the NYU Langone Medical Center, “It is definitely a myth that shaving will make the hair coarser or darker.”

The reason why this myth is so pervasive because we perceive blunt hairs differently than tapered hairs. Shaving cuts hair off at the surface, leaving it with a blunt edge. Other hair removal methods remove hair from the root, causing it to grow back with a tapered edge. A blunt-edged hair can appear thicker than one with a tapered edge, though the color and thickness remains the same.

How To Shave Your Face

Now that we’re finished myth-busting, it’s time to get down to business! Here are a few helpful tips about shaving your face.

Step 1 – Cleanse And Dry Your Face

Starting with a clean face will help you get a close, comfortable shave! Use your favorite cleanser, then dry your face thoroughly with a clean towel.

Step 2 – Apply Shaving Cream/Gel

A good shaving cream or gel will help the razor glide comfortably across your skin. It will also help keep your skin hydrated and reduce irritation.

One of the highest rated options on Amazon is Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel, a dermatologist recommended gel containing oat and vitamin E. You could also use good old fashioned aloe vera gel, which is moisturizing and will help the blade glide extra smoothly over your skin. :-)

Step 3 – Shave!

Using a fresh, sharp razor is one of the best ways to avoid razor burn. Another way to avoid razor burn is to use a single-bladed facial razor, which I recently started offering in my online shop!

These affordable razors won’t irritate your skin, and they fold closed for safe and compact storage. (They even come with a replacement razor head you can attach if your blade ever loses its edge!)

To use a facial razor, pull your skin taught and shave in the same direction as the hair is growing. Use light pressure and be extra careful until you’ve gotten the hang of it!

Step 4 – Apply A Moisturizer

Hydration is key after shaving, because you just uncovered a fresh, new layer of skin and you want to keep it moisturized! A moisturizer that has aloe vera in it (like this one) can help freshly shaved skin, but I prefer to use a few drops of rosehip oil instead.

Rosehip oil is not only soothing, but is packed with nourishing vitamins and fatty acids that can help improve the appearance of skin over time.

How Often Should I Shave My Face?

It depends on how quickly your hair grows! Many women only shave once or twice a month, but some women prefer to shave their faces weekly.

There you have it, a not-so-brief overview on the subject of shaving your face! Whether you end up choosing to shave your face or not, hopefully you leave this post a bit more enlightened on the subject than you were before! :-)
