For the most part, I try to share ideas and homemaking tips that anyone can use. The way I see it, the label of “homemaker” could apply to anyone who contributes to the work involved in running a household, regardless of gender!
With that being said, the information I’ll be sharing in today’s post will obviously not be universally applicable, because we’re going to be talking about feminine hygiene. More specifically, we’re going to be talking about feminine washes, and I’ll be sharing a simple recipe for making a homemade one using safe and natural ingredients!
So now that you’ve been fairly warned, let’s jump right in. :-) First, let’s talk about what a feminine wash is used for and whether or not you “need” to use one.
Do I Need To Use A Feminine Wash?
The short answer (at least in my humble opinion) is no, while the long answer is a bit more complicated. I don’t want anyone to feel like they need to use a feminine wash, especially when the vagina is quite capable of cleaning itself!
When it comes to feminine washes, what we’re really talking about is cleaning the vulva, not the vagina. The vulva includes the parts of female genitalia that are located outside of the body, which is neither as delicate or capable as self-cleaning as the vagina.
Feminine washes can indeed be useful for keeping the vulva clean and fresh, but it’s important to choose one with gentle, safe ingredients. So be sure to do your research while shopping, or simply continue reading to learn how to make a perfectly safe and natural feminine wash at home! :-)
Safe Ingredients For Gentle Cleansing
︎ Witch Hazel
Witch hazel contains compounds called tannins that can help reduce swelling, repair broken skin, and fight bacteria. Witch hazel can also help to reduce inflammation, and temporarily relieve itching, discomfort, and irritation.

︎ Rose Water
Rose water is a natural moisturizer and a powerful skin soother. It also has a cleansing properties that help to remove oil and dirt that can accumulate in your pores and cause pimples and breakouts.
︎ Castile Soap
Soap lifts foreign materials away from the surface of the skin so they can be rinsed away. Castile soap is a good choice for particularly sensitive skin because it tends to be gentler than other soaps.

︎ Plant Oils
Plant oils including fractionated coconut oil and lavender essential oil round out the list of ingredients in this homemade feminine wash. Fractionated coconut oil provides additional moisture to prevent dryness, while lavender oil adds skin-soothing and antibacterial properties.
Next, I’ll show you just how easy it is to bring these natural ingredients together and make your own homemade feminine wash!
