The 2 Easy DIY Treatments You Need To Fight Thinning Hair | One Good Thing by Jillee

hair mask

Back when I was a teenager, I used to curse my thick, stubbornly straight hair. But now that I’m… well, no longer a teenager, I’m cursing my progressively thinning hair! (The grass always seems greener on the other side, doesn’t it?)

Unfortunately, there are many different factors that can lead to thinning hair, like aging, over-styling, stress, and even disease. But as long as your doctor has ruled out an underlying medical condition, there are treatments you can do from the comfort of your own home to help strengthen and repair your hair!

And in today’s post, I’ll show you how to make and use two different all-natural treatments for thinning hair. But before we get to those recipes, I want to quickly highlight a few of the natural remedies that I’ve incorporated into them, and the various benefits they offer for thinning hair.

Natural Remedies For Thinning Hair

▶︎ Avocado

Not only are avocados a good source of moisture and nutrients, they’re also packed with fatty acids that can help nourish and strengthen your hair. (Much like your favorite guacamole, an avocado hair mask won’t stay fresh for very long. But as long as you mix the mask up shortly before applying it and discard any leftovers, that shouldn’t be an issue!)

▶︎ Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil makes an appearance in many of my DIY anti-aging solutions, so it should come as no surprise that I’m including it here as well! Geranium oil adds shine and body to hair while promoting clarity and gentle healing in the scalp.

▶︎ Cloves

Did you know that many store-bought hair care products contain cloves in their formulas? When used on hair, cloves can help to naturally enhance hair color and thicken weak, brittle strands.

Next, I’ll show you how to use these three powerhouse ingredients to make two different DIY hair treatments you can use to help thicken thinning hair! One is a mask and the other is a rinse, so if you want, you can even use them back-to-back for a double dose of hair-thickening benefits!

2 DIY Hair Thickening Treatments

1. Avocado & Coconut Hair Mask

Ingredients:

Flesh of 1/2 an avocado
1/4 cup virgin coconut oil
1 egg
15 drops geranium essential oil

Directions:

Add the avocado, coconut oil, egg, and geranium oil to a small bowl. Use a fork to mix it all together until everything is well combined.

How To Use:

To use your hair mask, apply a generous amount to wet or dry hair, cover your hair with a shower cap, and let the mask sit for about 20 minutes. Afterward, rinse the mask mixture out of your hair with cool water, then shampoo and condition as usual.

(The mask recipe should make enough for one application on medium-to-long hair. Those with short hair won’t need as much, so feel free to cut the recipe in half!)

2. Clove Hair Rinse

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp whole cloves
1 cup water

Directions:

Bring the water to a boil in a small pan on your on your stovetop, then add the cloves. Boil the cloves for 5 minutes, then take the pan off the stove and let it rest undisturbed for at least a few hours, or overnight.

After letting it rest, pour the cloves and water through a sieve to remove the cloves and store the finished rinse in an airtight container.

How To Use:

To use your hair rinse, start by shampooing and conditioning your hair as usual in the shower. Gently pour the hair rinse over your clean, wet hair, and that’s it—no rinsing necessary!

(If you still have some rinse leftover, you can save it in your fridge for a week or two for a second application.)
